Most important—please, please, please keep your cats INSIDE at all times. In other places, it may be safe to let cats wander outside unsupervised. But, here in Central Texas–including Lakeway–there are many deadly predators. Coyotes and various large birds of prey (hawks and owls) will attack and kill cats day and night. (Social media is full of sad posts about lost kitties never seen again, as well as of coyote and hawk sightings—THERE IS A CONNECTION, people!) We also have poisonous snakes, as well as a variety of other wildlife that will harm a kitten or adult cat. In addition, some dogs will attack cats, residents may use poisonous pest control, wandering cats pick up parasites and fatal diseases, they may get lost or be taken, and vehicles are always a deadly threat. If you love your cat, keep it inside. Cats do NOT need to be allowed outside to be fulfilled. There are many ways to enrich the life of an indoor-only cat (interactive toys, puzzle cubes, perches in front of a window looking out on a bird feeder, special videos, another cat, their own outside area—called a catio—fully screened/fenced for security, and on and on), so that kitty shares a safe and long life with you that is happy and fulfilled.
Also, please MICROCHIP your cats! Even if your kitty is 100% indoors, accidents happen. And, while a tag on a safety collar is a great idea, the collar can get pulled off, leaving your precious kitty lost without ID. BUT–you do have to keep the microchip data updated, so remember to call the host company when you move or change phone numbers.
